Current thinking on Knowably pricing. Transparent, usage-based, and designed to scale with your actual needs.
I am still figuring out the right pricing model. Honestly, most AI SaaS pricing pages are designed to confuse you into picking the middle tier. I would rather get this right than get it fast.
Here is what I know so far.
What Drives Costs
The biggest variable in running Knowably is LLM usage. Every query can trigger up to four LLM calls before generation even starts - query expansion, decomposition, reranking, filtering. The generation itself adds a fifth. Each of those calls costs money, and the amount depends on which provider and model you choose.
Storage costs scale with document volume. Embedding generation is a one-time cost per document chunk. Vector storage in PostgreSQL is cheap. The expensive part is processing - not storing.
Multi-tenancy is per-database, not per-row. That is more expensive to operate than shared databases. But it is the right architecture for data isolation, and I am not going to compromise on it to save on hosting costs.
Self-Hosted
Knowably can run entirely on your infrastructure. Laravel application, PostgreSQL database, Redis cache, optional Ollama for local LLM inference, optional self-hosted Langfuse for observability.
You bring the servers. You bring the LLM provider (or run Ollama locally). You control the data, the costs, and the deployment.
Self-hosted pricing will reflect licensing, not infrastructure.
Managed Cloud
For teams that do not want to manage infrastructure, I will offer a managed deployment. Same application, hosted and maintained by me. Your data still lives in a dedicated database - not shared with other tenants.
LLM costs will be usage-based. You can bring your own API keys or use shared capacity. I am still working out the right model here.
What I Am Working On
I want pricing that is transparent, predictable, and fair. Not "contact sales for a quote." Not hidden overage charges. Not a free tier that exists only to collect email addresses.
